Integral7, the global leader in credentialing services, announced it has achieved U.S. - EU Safe Harbor certification status from the U.S. Department of Commerce. This designation recognizes that the Integral7 data privacy and protection practices meet or exceed the European Union's directives.

"Safe Harbor certification is an important criteria in providing international legal protection for our clients and the individuals they credential," said Kirk Lundeen, president of Integral7. "It also streamlines the process for securely transferring data to and from the EU," he added.

Among the benefits of this certification for Integral7's clients, is that the requirements for prior approval of data transfers will be either waived or automatically granted by all 27 Member States of the European Union. It also ensures that any claims brought by European citizens against U.S. companies will be heard in the U.S. thereby helping to contain legal expenses.

The U.S. - EU Safe Harbor Framework was developed by the U.S. Department of Commerce in consultation with the European Commission to bridge the different data privacy approaches between the U.S. and European Commission's Directive on Data Protection. The framework provides an efficient means for U.S. organizations to comply with the Commission's Directive.

In order to be Safe Harbor Certified, organizations must comply with the seven Safe Harbor principles covering: notice, choice, transfers to third parties, access, security, data integrity, and enforcement. These principles are intended to give individuals more control over the accuracy and transfer of personal data.

The European Commission's Directive on Data Protection went into effect in October of 1998, and would prohibit the transfer of personal data to non-European Union nations that do not meet the European "adequacy" standard for privacy protection. While the United States and the European Union share the goal of enhancing privacy protection for their citizens, the United States takes a different approach to privacy from that taken by the European Union.
